This project, I would say, marks the beginning of me finding my niche. I had just purchased a book—published by a former professor’s friend in the industry—called “Vintage Menswear : a Collection from the Vintage Showroom.” Immediately, I fell in love. The catalogue contained detailed photos and descriptions of various menswear pieces dating from as far back as the late 19th century. Enthralled by a world of utilitarian details, purposeful design, and historical context—I had found my home.
Taking from various pieces which I had found in the catalogue, I began playing with silhouettes, looking at various types of pockets / fasteners / collars, and thinking of ways to place outdated styles into the context of the present day. I found myself to be particularly interested in the various styles of hunting uniforms which had been documented in the catalogue. Finally, landing on a design which alludes heavily to vintage, English hunting-wear.
The look consists of a hunting vest and hunting breeks. After finalizing my design, I began searching for fabrics which, while not being out of place today, heavily allude to a time when things were made to last. The materials used in the construction of this garment are as follows : wool coating, blended cotton (a plaid reminiscent of Burberry), a rayon twill lining, which was printed with the standard British Army Camouflage, and coat buttons made from gunmetal.
